My Role This Week:

I’m the Press Officer for the US PGA Championship at Bethpage Black Course. I’m looking after local media requests, helping arrange interviews for our broadcast partners and producing reports from the tournament.

Short Description:

This week, my OGIO bags and I made the exciting trip to New York for the second Major Championship of the year, the US PGA Championship at Bethpage Black Course. After a remarkable first Major of the year at the Masters Tournament in April, there is a new buzz around golf’s big four tournaments now. Who is responsible? Eldrick Tiger Woods, so good they named him twice! NYC here we come.

Our forays to American soil for the Majors and WGCs are some of the most enjoyable we get to experience as European Tour Press Officers. The diversity and different vibes of each city we visit is quite incredible and this week I could not pass up the opportunity to spend a couple of days in the Big Apple before the hard work began in Bethpage, Long Island. I got to take in many sites, including the World Trade Centre memorial, Central Park, the Statue of Liberty and this beautiful vista of one of the USA’s great cities.

There really is no denying it – Tiger Woods’ positive effect on the game of golf is unequivocal and unparalleled. When the ‘Big Cat’ shows up in top form, there is a notable difference everywhere on the site of the golf course and that includes the Media Centre. When he came into the Interview Room for his press conference, there was standing room only upon entry!

Aside from Tiger Woods, the big story this week is the difficulty of the Bethpage Black Course, which begins with a famous ‘Warning’ sign on the first tee to advise that it is only recommended for highly skilled golfers. One thing is for sure, there are plenty of those here this week. Whatever the story (fingers crossed it’s a winning European Tour Member!) it will always make for good copy here in the Media Centre, and a great spectacle for the fans.
