My Role This Week:

I’m the Press Officer for the Aberdeen Standard Investments Scottish Open at The Renaissance Club. Working with alongside my colleague Clare, we are handling national and international media requests, hosting press conferences, arranging interviews for our broadcast partners and producing reports from the tournament.

Short Description:

We’re at the Aberdeen Standard Investments Scottish Open for the third Rolex Series event of the year. We have partnered with Scottish Water this week with the aim of reducing single-use plastic consumption at Scotland’s national open by 80 per cent. All staff, players, caddies and members of the media were gifted a reusable bottle, with water filling stations dotted around the site for people to refill their containers. This one is positioned next to the putting green on the tenth tee.

We started the week with the second Hero Challenge of the 2019 season. Matt Kuchar, who won last year’s Hero Challenge in Scotland, made a valiant defence of his title, but was pipped in the final by Matt Fitzpatrick. Approximately 2,000 spectators lined the 15th hole as competitors aimed for targets on the green from a specially-constructed tee box. Here’s Matt in action en route to his victory.

There are nine Major Champions in the Aberdeen Standard Investments Scottish Open field this week, including America’s Justin Thomas who is making his debut in this event. The 2017 US PGA Champion arrived on Tuesday and took the opportunity to play at North Berwick that afternoon with his father and Kevin Kisner – who won the WGC-Dell Technologies Match Play earlier this year. We had a busy media run today with Justin, Rory McIlroy, Rickie Fowler and Matt Kucher. Rory is making his second appearance in three years at this event, Rickie won at Gullane in 2015, finishing just ahead of Kuchar who was second and then fourth in 2017.

The Renaissance Club is hosting a European Tour event for the first time in its relatively young history. The Tom Doak-designed course was only opened in 2008, but is regarded as another gem on the famous stretch in East Lothian known as Scotland’s Golf Coast. The fourth hole this week is a dog-leg left which runs along the Firth of Forth, with the spectacular Fidra lighthouse in the distance.
